Dog & Pony Show ‘split run’ broadside available at shop

Image

Tri-color rainbow run paper with block-printed black design of bulldog riding atop a circus horse, both wearing circus collars. by S.V. Medaris

This commemorative broadside for The Dog & Pony Show is now available at the Market Weight Press Shop. The exihibit was held at Artisan Gallery in Paoli, 2014.

This is a linocut block (the black-inked image you see here) printed on top of a “split run” or “rainbow roll” print on paper. 100% cotton, 300gm, high quality paper measures 11-1/4in x 25in.

That’s Rosie, the English Bulldog (I met her when we took our hogs in to Avon Locker in Darlington), mellow as usual, resting atop a circus pony. The cat in the fez is the critic, who obviously doesn’t think much of the show (nor wearing hats). Dexter is below, advertising the event—any excuse to run around with a precious stick in his mouth.

See detailed close-ups of the print and purchasing information at the Market Weight Press Shop.

Grrr Kitty

The story behind GrrrKitty:

mixed media work of hanging deer carcass and small kitten licking up blood from it

“A Wisconsin Tradition” by S.V. Medaris • 8ft x 6ft • acrylic paint, relief printing and lithography on watercolor paper. More pics at the Consumption Show. (click image to enlarge—and see the kitten)

I was photographing a deer being processed in my neighbor’s front yard. While the humans worked away on this hanging buck, carefully skinning, then cutting the different cuts of venison out, the animals gathered and sat quietly, awaiting their flung piece of meat that was expertly tossed into the waiting mouths of each of the various Weimaraners, and other dogs. The cats however, moved in, and whenever there was an opening, ran forward and settled down to lick up the pooled blood near the buck’s head.

There was this very fierce little kitten, the tiniest kitten I’ve ever seen. Small in stature, but huge in attitude, energy, spirit. I approached her to take her photo, and the highest-pitched, cutest little growl came rumbling out of her venison-filled mouth. She was working on this huge (for her) hunk of deer meat, and as I approached, she glared at me very ferociously, then slammed her tiny puffball of a paw down right next to her meat. Then to the other side “Bam!!” (I’m sure she heard), but it was only a soft, barely perceptible “poof” sound. And the high-pitched growling. I just fell in love with her survivalist, ferocious instinct. She was going to eat her venison and NOBODY was going to touch it.

One of the men working on the deer was taken by her too (everyone was laughing at this outrageously brave little fuzzball), and shortly afterward adopted her and took her home. After watching her thump her paw down first one side, then the other—delineating her space around HER food and keeping out all threats, he called her “Thumper.”

I did a mixed media piece (at top), about 8ft tall, depicting this scene of the huge hanging buck, and the tiny kitten below it, drinking the pooled blood. A fellow grad student at the time said, “If you ever do a t-shirt with that kitten on it, I want it.” Recently, I was finally able to send that t-shirt to him (black on grey t-shirt). And here it is now, in bright colors for the kiddies at the shop!

For now, here is a hodgepodge of kids’ tees—many colors—to see which ones folks like the most, available at the online shop. I will most likely do an edition of kids tees in hot pink + one other color—help decide! Send your votes at any time to info@marketweightpress.com.

Thinking of doing a small edition of GrrrKitty on pink women’s tees…any interest? Want it in an adult size? Let me know what color/size and I’ll see if there’s enough interest in an edition. Printmaking serendipity=new transfer technique

Super psyched… Accidentally printed a linoblock on pressbed, and discovered simple way to recreate new block from old. I’ve always transferred block print to acetate or similar before transferring the print onto another block (this is so I have a backup block in case the original block breaks down–like if ur printing 100 t-shirts….).

This transfer to pressbed instead of acetate is way better. Photo below shows process of each print–each one went thru the press one by one (right to left)–1.)right/original block, 2.)print on plexi/pressbed, 3.) print onto new block of lino (placed it face down over the pressbed print and ran thru press).

Can show each step (got photos), but will do later–have to clean the pressbed!
GrrrKitty transfer

(Oh yeah, and I’d have 2 carve the lino after image is transferred, but that’s the easy part)

Printing for Printbangerz

Printbangerz Ball and Art Market coming up soon (next weekend!), so printing “under $50” items…. Found some pretty sturdy ripstop nylon bags, smooth enough to print woodcut/linocut on. They even have a cool little toggle-close inner pocket. Here’s a sampling of the designs I’m using:

colorful bags with block-printed designs on them

Ripstop nylon bags with variety of Market Weight Press designs…Polish chicken, GrrrKitty, Big piglet, Praise the Lard

So far, the consensus on FB is Big Piglet, Polish and PTLard. The GrrrKitty I’m saving more for tees.

Here’s one for my neice in a 3T, below. Also printing on grey, pebble brown and pink tees and tanks for women and juniors, and some smaller-sized adult, moss green or grey tees…

Fierce kitten linocut with Grrrr text on pink tee

Grrr Kitty on pink 3T tee. Linocut. Why so fierce? This little kitten was defending her meat and blood from anyone who dared approach. A deer was being processed behind/beside her (not on the linocut here). She (pretty wild little kitten) was guarding and eating everything up. Growling ferociously in her tiny voice and slamming her tiny front paw down on either side of the morsel she was devouring, should you try to come near. Survivalist kitten.

And some different sizes, below.

fierce kitten linocut printed on a variety of colored tees

GrrrKitty tees. Linocut on cotton.

Printing mostly PTLard and Cornish Cock for the bigger adult tees, with some GrrrKitty on women’s pebble brown and grey tees.

Prices for each item will be around $20. Will have available for sale after Printbangerz, when I return and set up my online store–soon I promise.
