Going to try to get it done within 1 week&#8217;s time&#8211;kind of need to. Wish me luck ;-)<\/p>\n<p>(Hanging on the left is one of the finished carcasses, just completed this weekend. This is one of a group that will be in an installation at the <a href=\"http:\/\/svmedaris.com\/shows.html\">&#8220;From Pattern to Processing&#8221; show<\/a> opening reception May 7th)<\/p>\n<p>The giant chicken print will be one of many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.overturecenter.com\/production\/beastly-prints\">Beastly Prints<\/a> in our 3-person show (Briony Morrow-Cribbs, Patrick Smyzcek, and me) at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.overturecenter.com\/production\/beastly-prints\">Overture<\/a> (reception May 6th).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 254px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/svmedaris.com\/2011art\/carving_start_8ft_chkn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"starting to carve the giant Wyandotte\" src=\"http:\/\/svmedaris.com\/2011art\/carving_start_8ft_chkn.jpg\" alt=\"woman stands on stools to carve near the top of an 8ft plywood wood block\" width=\"244\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The carving begins (click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is one way to carve an 8ft tall birch plywood block (at right).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\">Why a red block?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you&#8217;ll notice, around the perimeter of the rooster&#8217;s head, you can see the bare wood showing through&#8211;that&#8217;s where I&#8217;ve cut. If I don&#8217;t color the block beforehand, I have a hard time seeing clearly where I&#8217;ve cut. <\/p>\n<p>The process:\u00a0<br \/>\n1.) Draw image onto 4x8ft birch plywood block with brush and waterproof drawing ink. Let dry thoroughly.<br \/>\n2.) Mix up a thin wash of acrylic (any color you want that&#8217;s transparent and obviously not wood color nor black) and water, and brush lightly over the whole board. Let dry thoroughly.<br \/>\n3.) Coat entire board with thin layer of shellac. This coats the board, sealing it somewhat, which will make the cuts sharper\/cleaner and will keep the ink from soaking into the wood too much when it&#8217;s time to ink and print the block.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the big blocks and prints multiply, the dogs seem to be growing smaller.
